Quick definition

A/B testing is a method of comparing two versions of one variable, a headline, a thumbnail, an ad creative, to see which performs better with a real audience. Only one variable changes between the two versions, so any difference in results can be traced directly back to that one change.

What Is A/B Testing?

A/B testing is a data-driven way to find out which version of a creative asset resonates most with your audience. Rather than relying on assumptions or personal preferences, brands can use real performance data to understand what drives results.

How A/B Testing Works

An audience is split into two groups, each shown a different version of the same asset, version A and version B, with every other element held identical. Results are then compared against a specific metric, like click-through rate, conversion rate, or engagement, to determine which version performed better.

Keeping everything but one variable constant is what makes the test meaningful. Change two things at once and there’s no way to know which change actually drove the difference in results.

What to A/B Test in Creator and UGC Ads

Common variables tested in creator content and UGC ads include the hook or opening line, thumbnail or cover image, call-to-action wording, video length, the creator themselves (testing the same script across different creators), ad angles, and whether the content is framed as a review, a tutorial, or a direct demo.

Testing one variable at a time means a brand can isolate what's actually driving performance (a stronger hook, a different creator, or a shorter runtime) rather than guessing at why one ad outperformed another.

How to Read A/B Test Results

A result only matters if the sample size is large enough and the difference is meaningful relative to normal variation. A small gap between two versions after a handful of impressions isn’t a reliable signal.

Most platforms report statistical significance directly, a measure of how confident you can be that the difference wasn’t just random noise. Track creative analytics like CTR, retention, and CPA, which are useful indicators of ad performance.

It’s also worth running a test long enough to account for day-of-week or audience fatigue effects, rather than calling a winner after just a few hours of data.

A/B Testing vs. Multivariate Testing

Multivariate testing changes several variables simultaneously (testing combinations of headline, image, and copy at once), which can reveal how variables interact with each other. However, multivariate testing typically requires a much larger audience to produce statistically reliable results.

A/B testing isolates one variable at a time, comparing exactly two versions to find a clear, specific cause for any performance difference. A/B testing is simpler and faster to run; multivariate testing is more comprehensive but more resource-intensive.

Run Creative Tests at Scale with SideShift

Because SideShift gives brands access to a large pool of creators, so you can run creative tests at scale, then compare results by creator and asset in one dashboard.

Instead of waiting weeks between tests, you can try several ideas at once, like different creator styles or hooks, and see which one earns the most views and engagement.

Find what wins, brief more of it, and keep testing the next variable. Post your first brief on SideShift and put your next test in creators' hands.

Frequently asked questions

What is an example of A/B testing?

A brand runs the same product ad with two different hooks, one opening with a question, one opening with a bold claim, shown to similar audiences. Whichever version earns a higher click-through or conversion rate is the winner.

Does A/B testing really work?

Yes, when run correctly, with one variable isolated, a large enough sample size, and results measured against statistical significance, A/B testing reliably identifies which version of an asset performs better with a real audience.

Is A/B testing dead?

No. While AI-driven and automated testing tools have made the process faster and less manual, the underlying principle, comparing versions against a real audience to see what performs better, remains a standard, widely used practice in marketing.
